DAYTON, Ohio — An Air Force base in southwest Ohio is a burgeoning refuge for military planes fleeing possibly damaging storms now approaching the East Coast.
By Friday night, 108 of them had arrived at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, including C-17 Globemaster transports, F-15 and F-15E fighters, AV-8B Harrier strike aircraft and a KC-135 refueling tanker from the Florida National Guard.
The planes are arriving from Air Force bases in Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina. Base spokesman Derek Kaufman says about 350 flight, maintenance and security personnel accompanied the planes.
Kaufman says Wright-Patterson could receive additional planes, depending on the progress of Tropical Storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike.
