The Air Force has selected 228 active-duty enlisted airmen and civilians to try for their second lieutenant's gold bars at Officer Training School next year.
In a Monday release, the Air Force said the Air Force Recruiting Service's selection board considered 453 applications, resulting in a selection rate of 50.33 percent.
Fifty of the selectees are enlisted; the rest are civilians, the Air Force said.
The candidates will attend OTS at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama in 2016.
The board reviewed applicants' academic discipline, grade point average and Air Force Office Qualifying Test scores, as well as subjective measures such as work experience, accomplishments, adaptability, character, leadership ability, and potential for future growth.
Enlisted airmen also had their performance reports and commanders' recommendations evaluated.
The selection process is similar to an officer promotion board, and three colonels review every application.
The number of officer candidates selected, as well as the selection rate, is lower than the 304 chosen for a 2015 class last October. The selection rate for that class was 76.57 percent.
