An Air Force Academy cadet died on Sunday during a commercial skydiving accident, according to an academy news release.

Cadet 1st Class Kaleb Estes, from Cadet Squadron 39, died Sunday afternoon near Ellicott, Colorado. Ellicott is about an hour east of the Air Force Academy.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Kaleb Estes, and our thoughts are with his friends, classmates and loved ones," academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson said in the release. "We are ready to support Cadet Estes' family as well as his USAFA family through this difficult time."

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office responded to the incident around 12:44 p.m., according to information from the sheriff's office. 

Medical personnel arrived and began life-saving efforts, which were unsuccessful, the release said.

There was no information immediately available on the cause of the accident, and local authorities are continuing to investigate.
