The 7th Bomb Wing has identified an airman killed Sunday in a vehicle crash as Senior Airman Lawrence Ross, a B-1 hydraulics systems journeyman with the 7th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas.
"Airman Ross was the kind of airman you hope to have in your shop," Master Sgt. William Alty, first sergeant for the maintenance squadron, said in a Monday news release. "He was an amazing person and a true joy to get to know and work with. Airman Ross will be missed by all who knew him."
Ross had been involved in a crash and was walking along the roadway just south of Abilene, Texas, when he was struck and killed by a car about 6:05 a.m. on Sunday, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety report. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Ross was an incredible part of the 7th AMXS [Aircraft Maintenance Squadron] family; his loss is felt throughout the squadron and by all of Team Dyess," Maj. John Adams, Jr., Ross' squadron commander, said in Monday's news release. "My thoughts and prayers as well as those of the entire squadron are with his family and friends during this difficult time."
The crash is under investigation, the Texas Department of Public Safety report says.
"Whenever we lose an airman from Dyess, it is felt across the base and the Big Country," Col. Michael Bob Starr, 7th Bomb Wing commander, said in an earlier news release. "Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the family members and friends who grieve the loss of this airman today."
It has been a difficult time for the Dyess community. On Oct. 2, four airmen from the 39th Airlift Squadron at Dyess were killed when a C-130J crashed in Afghanistan: Capt. Jonathan J. Golden, 33; Capt. Jordan B. Pierson, 28; Staff Sgt. Ryan D. Hammond, 26; and Senior Airman Quinn L. Johnson-Harris, 21.
Two other airmen from Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts, were also killed in that crash: Senior Airman Nathan C. Sartain, 29; and Airman 1st Class Kcey E. Ruiz, 21; both assigned to the 66th Security Forces Squadron.
