The Air Force has selected 394 active-duty enlisted airmen and civilians to attend Officer Training School to work toward commissions as second lieutenants.
The Air Force Recruiting Service said in a May 1 release that 65.78 percent of the 599 applicants were chosen by this year's second OTS as part of the 15OT02 selection board. That is much higher than the 50.33 percent selection rate announced in March for this year's first OTS board, which was announced in March.
Friday's The announcement was originally scheduled to be released April 10. But AFRS Commander Brig. Gen. James Johnson said the delay allowed the board to select more applicants and was "a good thing."
"The release date was delayed to better posture AFRS to meet fiscal 2016 requirements," Johnson said in the release. "It also meant we were able to add more people to the list, ensuring that we had the right number of officers with the right skill sets."
AFRS said that 192 of the selectees are enlisted; the rest are civilians.
The release said cCandidates will attend basic officer training at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama in 2016. But AFRS spokeswoman Christa D'Andrea said in an April email that a small number of selectees could attend at the end of fiscal 2015, "based on current Air Force requirements."
When deciding who should attend OTS, the selection board reviews applicants' academic discipline, grade point average and Air Force Officer Qualifying Test scores, as well as subjective measures such as work experience, accomplishments, adaptability, character, leadership ability and potential for future growth.
For enlisted airmen, the board also evaluates performance reports and commanders' recommendations.
The selection process is similar to an officer promotion board, and three colonels review every application.
