Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) is a publicly funded 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that builds and donates specially adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans, to enable them to rebuild their lives. Since the organization’s inception in 2004, HFOT has built and donated over 400 homes in 45 states, while nearly 90 cents out of every dollar spent has gone directly to program services for Veterans. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, HFOT currently has more than 65 home-build projects in various stages of construction nationwide.

Rebuilding Lives is the most important aspect of HFOT’s mission, therefore, the organization stays in contact with Veterans after home delivery. Most of these Veterans have sustained injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, blindness, severe burns and/or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Empowered by the freedom a specially adapted and mortgage-free home brings, these injured Veterans can now focus on their recovery, while embarking on new careers, completing college degrees, and starting families. Many have returned to their life’s work of serving others, embracing their roles as motivational speakers, sharing their stories with groups and classrooms around the country or taking to a national platform to promote awareness of Veteran suicide, homelessness, and PTSD.

A 2023 HFOT home recipient, Army CW2 Rebecca Mann says her home has alleviated the challenges of daily household tasks. “Receiving an adapted home from HFOT has enabled me to live safely and be independent even when I have to use my wheelchair,” she says.

Each of HFOT’s specially adapted custom homes for injured Veterans is equipped with over 40 major special adaptations and exceeds ADA standards, providing full accessibility for the Veteran. Adaptations include wider halls and doorways, automatic door openers, roll under sinks, stove tops, and counters, pull down shelving, generators and safe rooms, all designed to help the Veteran live independently. Homes For Our Troops provides a pro-bono financial planner for three years to assist in financial planning and household budgeting. HFOT also provides homeownership education and warranty coverage to ensure that the Veteran is set up for long-term success as a homeowner.

HFOT has more than 100 Veterans in the application process for our program for severely injured Veterans. As a top-rated military and Veterans’ nonprofit organization, Homes For Our Troops relies on the generosity of donors and supporters.
