Fans who attend Air Force Academy football games this season will be able to buy beer and wine on-site, according to the academy.
The Colorado Springs, Colorado-based school announced the rule change on Thursday after receiving feedback from a fan-engagement committee, academy spokesman Lt. Col. Allen Herritage told Air Force Times via email.
The cash-only purchases of alcohol will be available one hour before kickoff through the middle of the third quarter inside Gates 5 and 6. Cadets, cadet candidates and individuals in uniform won’t be allowed to purchase beer or wine “because they are representing their respective service, and some may be participating in official duties during the games,” Herritage said.
“We worked hard with our teammates here at the academy to ensure we have best practices in place to keep Falcon Stadium a family-friendly environment,” he said. “We are confident we can do this responsibly and successfully and add to the fan experience.”
Herritage said the decision was made to add to the fan experience, and revenue will benefit readiness efforts at the academy.
The Air Force Academy has sold beer and wine at nonsporting venues, and it’s the first service academy to open up sales at football games. The U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, and the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, do not sell alcohol at their stadiums.
The Air Force Falcons football season kicks off Sept. 2 at home against Virginia Military Institute.
