Outgoing Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Larry Spencer has been selected as the next president of the Air Force Association.

"Gen. Spencer's leadership and success in the Air Force is inspiring," AFA Chairman of the Board Scott Van Cleef said in a Wednesday news release. "As a great AFA supporter, we look forward to him serving as our next AFA President and building upon the long history of success AFA has achieved."

The Air Force Association currently has more than 93,000 members, the news release says. Spencer's duties as head of AFA include serving as publisher of Air Force Magazine, the association's official publication. The association has more than 93,000 members, the news release says

"Spencer is one of the few Air Force officers who began his career in the enlisted ranks and rose to become a four-star general," the news release says.

After being commissioned through Officer Training School in 1980, Spencer he went on to become the first Air Force officer to serve as assistant chief of staff in the White House Military Office, the news release says. He became vice chief of staff in July 2012. His retirement was announced this week.

Spencer is expected to assume his duties at AFA later this year, the news release says. He will replace retired Gen. Craig McKinley, who left earlier this year to take a position with the National Defense Industrial Association.

Lt. Gen. David Goldfein, currently director of the Joint Staff, has been nominated to replace Spencer, the Air Force announced Wednesday.
