Airmen who have received the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal can now wear service stars for subsequent deployments, according to the Air Force Personnel Center.
That means active-duty, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve airmen who have received the award can wear a star on the medal or service ribbon every time they are subsequently awarded the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, AFPC announced on Monday. The policy, which is retroactive to Sept. 11, 2001, applies to the following five missions:
- Operation Enduring Freedom, Sept. 11, 2001, to present.
- Operation Iraqi Freedom, March 19, 2003, to Aug. 31, 2010.
- Operation Nomad Shadow, Nov. 5, 2007, to present.
- Operation New Dawn, Sept. 1, 2010, to Dec. 31, 2011.
- Operation Inherent Resolve, June 15, 2014, to present.
Active-duty, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve airmen who have deployed more than once as part of the five authorized missions should present supporting documentation to their military personnel section so they can wear the service stars.
The policy does not apply to airmen who were awarded the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal but decided they wanted to wear the Iraqi or Afghanistan Campaign Medals or the Air Force Expeditionary Medal instead, the Monday AFPC news release says.
