SCOTIA, N.Y. — Three aircraft and dozens of airmen in a New York-based Air National Guard unit are heading to Greenland as part of its annual mission to support the National Science Foundation.

The LC-130 cargo planes and more than 70 members of the 109th Airlift Wing are departing Monday morning from Stratton Air National Guard Base in Scotia in Schenectady County.

The 109th has been providing this year's mission support since April. Monday's departure will be the unit's fifth rotation to Greenland, where its support will continue through the summer.

The wing is the only unit in the U.S. military that flies ski-equipped LC-130s capable of landing on snow and ice. The unit also supports National Science Foundation missions to Antarctica each year.
