U.S. European Command has extended restrictions on traveling to Brussels, Paris and Turkey.
On Tuesday, the command's website updated the travel restrictions which did not provide any end dates for the prohibitions on U.S. service members, their families and Defense Department civilians.
The restrictions prohibit any official or unofficial travel to the cities of Brussels and Paris — or any suburbs within 50 kilometers of Paris — and the country of Turkey.
Authorities in Belgium are still looking for several terrorism suspects who are believed to be linked to the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris that killed 130 people. The search has promoted the Belgium government to shut down schools and public transportation in Brussels.
EUCOM advises troops, their families and Defense Department civilians to be extra vigilant when using public transportation or attending holiday festivals or events, according to the command's website.
Other precautions include:
- Be aware of immediate surroundings and avoid large crowds or crowed places.
- Be prepared for additional security screening and unexpected disruptions.
- Consult your chain of command on any future leave, liberty, or travel plans.
- Stay in touch with family members and ensure they know how to reach you in the event of an emergency.
- Report any suspicious activity to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
The travel restrictions for Brussels were implemented on Nov. 21 and originally set to last 72 hours. The Paris restrictions went into effect on Nov. 15, and the country-wide restrictions for Turkey were enacted on Nov. 10.
