HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah — The drinking water at Hill Air Force Base has unusually high levels of copper.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the base announced the findings late last week.
The results are based on tests in June of 36 samples of tap water conducted by the Utah Department of Environmental Quality.
Eleven samples had copper levels above drinking water standards.
Base officials say the copper likely stems from corroded interior pipes causing metal to run into the water.
American Water, which operates the water system, says it will work with the state to decrease the corrosiveness and do further testing.
The base is advising residents to run tap water for 30 to 60 seconds before drinking and not to consume water from the hot tap.
