Air Force officers can now decline in-residence intermediate or senior developmental education without having to leave the Air Force, according to an Air Force press release.

In the past, if an officer opted out of a developmental education assignment, he or she had to submit a request for separation or retirement within seven days of his or her  assignment notification date.

The seven-day option policy still applies to officers who don't accept an operational assignment, however. Operational assignments remain essential, whereas development opportunities focus on education, according to the press release.

Airmen who decline an in-residence opportunity will need senior rater recommendation to the board if they want to be considered later to compete for a program and seat during the annual call for developmental education.

Officers are urged to find alternate ways to complete their developmental education, such as through distance learning, according to the release.

Officers who wish to decline must do so by Dec. 19, or as soon as possible, so the Air Force can notify alternate airmen for the program.

The intermediate and senior developmental education selection list is on the myPers website
