More Warthogs are taking the fight to the Islamic State group.

Twelve A-10s and about 350 airmen from the 127th Wing of the Michigan Air National Guard have deployed to Southwest Asia to take part in Operation Inherent Resolve, the fight against the extremist group in Iraq and Syria.

The deployment includes the 107th Fighter Squadron, the 127th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, the 127th Maintenance Squadron and the 127th Operations Support Squadron, according to the Michigan Air National Guard. The group deployed earlier this month and are now fighting daily in the operations, 127th Wing Commander Brig. Gen. John Slocum said in a release.

"Today, our Michigan Airmen are fully engaged in the fight," Michigan Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Gregory Vadnais said in the release. "We could not be more proud of the work that they are already doing and the way they have answered their nation's call."

The deployment is expected to last about six months. The unit is taking over for the Indiana Air National Guard's 163rd Fighter Squadron, which deployed in October.

Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said in a statement that the deployment shows the personal connection of the operation back in the U.S.

"Today, that fight is personal to many more families as these airmen from Selfridge Air National Guard Base deploy to the region," Stabenow said. "The A-10 Warthogs are the very best close-air-support aircraft in the United States military."
